Tragic Road Accident in Karachi: Pregnant Woman, Husband, and Newborn Killed

KARACHI: A tragic accident occurred near Malir Halt bus stop, where a speeding water tanker ran over a motorcyclist and his pregnant wife, killing both of them on the spot. The newborn, who was delivered during the accident, also did not survive.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Abdul Qayyum, was returning home with his pregnant wife after a medical check-up when a speeding water tanker coming from Malir Halt towards Shahrah-e-Faisal ran over them.

Rescue sources reported that the severely injured woman gave birth at the scene, but the newborn could not survive. Rescue teams shifted the bodies of the couple and the newborn to Jinnah Hospital.

Following the incident, enraged citizens attempted to set the water tanker on fire after vandalizing it, but police intervened and prevented the situation from escalating further.

Police confirmed that the victims were residents of Natha Khan, identified as 24-year-old Zainab and her 26-year-old husband, Abdul Qayyum. The driver of the tanker has been arrested, and the vehicle has been taken into custody. Officials suspect the accident occurred due to brake failure. Legal action is being taken against the arrested driver and other involved individuals.

Speaking to the media, Zainab’s father, Gul Rehman, expressed his grief and anger, demanding strict punishment for the driver. "My daughter was pregnant and had gone out for medical treatment, but the water tanker crushed her and my son-in-law," he said. "The driver should be hanged."

Abdul Qayyum’s brother stated that the couple had been married for only a year and were on their way home after Zainab’s check-up when the tragedy struck.

The incident highlights the increasing number of fatal road accidents in Karachi caused by reckless heavy vehicles, including dumpers and water tankers. Reports indicate that traffic accidents have claimed 214 lives this year, with 68 fatalities caused by heavy traffic alone.
